Mostly alone at the hospital what should I bring?

Hello all,

I know most of you been asked 1000+ times "what should I bring to the hospital?" and I think I have the basics

Chapstick
Slippers
Robe
Pillows

But I wanted to ask this. I will mostly be alone. We have a 2 year old daughter and no family in state so my husband will spend our "daycares hours" or close to it with me at the hospital but from about 4:30-5:00 on I will be alone until the next morning when he shows up (I dont assume will be early since he already said he wasnt thrilled about sitting in a hospital for 3 or 4 days). Which dont get me wrong that is fine with me I never get alone time and miss it dearly and after my oh so pleasant mood swings while on this liquid diet he probably could use a break too. So the first day I am sure I wont be up for much at all beside the walking they will have me do. I have had major surgery before and spent the first day out of recovering sleeping and only awake about 20 minutes in between. But what about the 2nd and 3rd day? I know walk walk walk.. But were you still all that tired? Or should I bring my laptop and movies? (I heard they have WiFi there) Or would it be to hard form me to move alone? Would I be able to get it or set it up?
I assume there is a TV in the room. Was that enough? What did you do when you were there? I really just dont want to lay there and focus on "the pain" I need to keep my brain busy or asleep

Last question.. I was given my passcode for family to call and check on me while at the hospital. Does anyone know the Phone number they call to get the right department? I wasnt provided that.

I appreciate all your help.

Thanks,

Sher

First off, good luck on your surgery. You will do great! The phone number for Centennial Women's Hospital is: (615)342-1919. They can look you up by the patient last name and transfer you to the right area of the hospital.

Be aware that someone will need to hold your bag and pillows under AFTER surgery when you have been assigned a room. I thought I could bring my favorite pillow in with me to the surgery but was told that isn't possible.

The only other thing I would bring is a change of clothes, underwear, socks, etc. and any books or MP3 player you need to pass the time. To be honest, I brought books and never read them. The whole hospital experience is a bit of a fog (even though it was only 5 weeks ago!). I think the pain drugs  helped me to lose track of time! :-p

Thanks for the number.

My husband will be there the day I have surgury until I am in my own room so he will have all my belongings. However, after that I was wondering how alert or active I would be. I guess less is best in this case.

Thanks again.

You were going to bring a pillow to surgery?    That's a new one on me!

I had no plans to bring anything with me to the surgery. My hubby can bring it all to me later when I am in my own room.

Sorry  - I didn't mean I thought you were planning on that.    I had meant to reply to NashvilleItalian.   I'm posting inbetween taking care of my granddaughter, and my vision is such that I'm not the most accurate poster even when I'm taking my time.

To be honest, u probably won't feel like doing anything except napping and maybe a little tv.  The pain meds r great and u will need them.  I wouldn't worry about taking any amusements.

Good luck!  You and I have the same surgeon.  I had the gastric sleeve on Nov 6 and have lost 103 pounds.  I am now at goal and on maintenance.

I was in a fog post-op--either walking sipping or sleeping...

Hey Sher!  It'll be here before you know it and you'll be snoozing the day away with your pain pump!

I had outpatient band surgery, so I didn't take much at all.  Blistex, flip flops and a pillow.  Heck, I didn't even fool with wearing a bra!  Why bother?  It's just going to come right off and go in a bag anyway!

If there are other personal hygiene items you use frequently, like hand lotion or personal wipes, I'd take along some of those.  A brush and ponytail holders or a barette if your hair gets in your face.

I also took my cell phone so I could text people updates once I was out of surgery.  Fortunately my parents were able to hold it while I was in surgery.

All in all, I'd go the minimalist route.  Your hubby can always bring you something you need after you're there, if it's super urgent.  For me, with out patient surgery, I ended up sleeping most of the first week!  Then, once I felt better, I hit the ground running.

I bought the first season of Criminal Minds to watch on DVD while I was out and never got around to it!  I definitely wouldn't bother hauling a DVD player or laptop with movies to the hospital.

Good luck!!! The liquid diet will be over soon!!!
